Most marine organisms have been studies much less than terrestrial species, particularly those of great economic or medical importance. This means that fewer experimental apparatus, reagents and databases are available. Part of the enormous fun and satisfaction of working with these non-model species is that scientists have to build their own equipment. The variety and lifestyles of organisms in marine tidal environments has necessitated ingenious solutions to measuring and manipulating tidal activity to help us understand how it works.
